Beyond the Field: Lessons from Baseball and Softball that Inspire My Work

Written By: Willie Ramirez, Operations Director

I've always had a passion for sports, with baseball being a significant part of my journey. I played baseball throughout high school, where I honed my skills and developed a deep love for the game. One of the highlights of my baseball career was participating in the Japanese JET tournament, where I had the incredible opportunity to meet and share the field with baseball legend Hideki Matsui. That encounter inspired me and solidified my commitment to the sport.

After my time in baseball, I transitioned to softball, which I enjoyed immensely. Being a part of DASINY Softball enriched my experience and allowed me to embrace the camaraderie and competition that come with the game. I currently manage several softball teams and serve as a co-commissioner of the Bomba Softball League (BSL), where I work to promote the sport and create a positive environment for players. I presently play softball, and the lessons I learn on the field shape my perspective on teamwork and the joy of athleticism.

Family is at the heart of my life. I’m a proud parent of three kids as well as a grandfather to three. I cherish our big family events that bring everyone together. Many of these gatherings revolve around sports, fostering a sense of unity and shared passion for athletic pursuits.

In addition to playing, I’ve spent over a decade as an umpire, and I'm currently the chief umpire at Volo Sports. This role allows me to stay close to the game I love while ensuring fair play. As an umpire, I get to witness the joy of families and teams coming together, reinforcing the values of sportsmanship and collaboration. Each game becomes a celebration of togetherness, and I truly appreciate the impact of sports on our community and family life.

My experiences in sports directly relate to my role as the Director of Operations for the newly formed non-profit, Bridge Play Foundation. Just as I’ve fostered teamwork and unity on the field, I aim to cultivate those values within our organization. At Bridge Play Foundation, we strive to build connections and create opportunities for our community, using the principles I’ve learned through sports—dedication, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence.

Overall, my journey through baseball, softball, and umpiring reflects my lifelong commitment to the spirit of sports, family, and community, which I now carry into my professional endeavors.
